and our greed is consuming our own people, too - 3,500 dead soldiers killed in Iraq (as of June 2007), tens of thousands of wounded, many of them severely. No official figures exist for the number of Iraqis and Afghans who have been murdered, but hundreds of thousands is probably a conservative estimate, and a few million have been displaced as refugees (either internally or those who have fled to Jordan, Syria and other neighboring countries).
200 to 300 thousand Iraqis were killed in the 1991 Gulf War, over a million people died from the so-called "sanctions" in the 1990s (really, a siege), and depleted uranium litters the countryside with toxic waste that will be deadly for eons.
